$450,000 Penalty for Not Reporting Refrigerator Defects

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has provisionally accepted a settlement agreement under which a Mississippi company has agreed to pay a $450,000 civil penalty to settle charges that it knowingly failed to timely report defects in its refrigerators. The CPSC alleged that these refrigerators had tower hinges attaching the door to the cabinet that could detach, allowing the door to fall on consumers. Any interested person may ask the CPSC not to accept this agreement or otherwise comment on its contents by filing a written request no later than July 13.
