Textile and Apparel Imports Up in September; Big Gains for South Asia, Turkey

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.19 billion square meter equivalents in October, up 2.2% from September and 8.1% compared to October 2012. Textile imports totaled 2.87 billion SME, up 4.4% for the month and 10.8% from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.32 billion SME were down 0.9% from September but up 4.8% from a year earlier.

For the year-to-date as of October 2013 total imports of textiles and apparel were 47.8 billion SME, a 4.4% increase from the same period in 2012, as textile imports climbed 3.8% to 26.6 billion SME and apparel imports were up 5.3% to 21.2 billion SME. For the 12-month period ending in October total imports were 4.2% higher at 56.1 billion SME as textile imports rose 3.2% to 31.3 billion SME and apparel imports moved ahead 5.5% to 24.7 billion SME.
