Textile and Apparel Imports See Monthly Gain but Drop from Previous Year

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 4.79 billion square meter equivalents in May, up 3.9 percent from April but down 0.2 percent from May 2013. Textile imports totaled 2.90 billion SME, up 6.6 percent for the month and 2.2 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 1.89 billion SME were unchanged from April and down 3.7 percent from a year earlier.

Imports of textiles and apparel totaled 23.0 billion SME for year-to-date May, up 3.7 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports rose 5.8 percent to 13.2 billion SME and apparel imports gained 1.1 percent to 9.73 billion SME.

For the 12-month period ending in May 2014, total imports of 57.4 billion SME were up 4.6 percent from the same period a year earlier and included 32.4 billion SME in textile imports (up 6.1 percent) and 25.0 billion SME in apparel imports (up 2.7 percent).

With respect to specific sources, imports of textile and apparel products (except cotton and silk blend textiles) saw the following changes in May.
