Textile and Apparel Imports Rebound in April as Shipments from China, Israel Surge

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 4.61 billion square meter equivalents in April, up 10.6% from March and 5.1% from April 2013. Textile imports totaled 2.72 billion SME, up 16.2% for the month and 6.6% from the previous year, while apparel imports of 1.89 billion SME were up 3.3% from March and 3.0% from a year earlier.

Imports of textiles and apparel totaled 18.2 billion SME for year-to-date April, up 4.8% from a year earlier. Textile imports rose 6.8% to 10.3 billion SME and apparel imports gained 2.3% to 7.84 billion SME.

For the 12-month period ending in April 2014, total imports of 57.4 billion SME edged up 0.5% from the same period a year earlier and included 32.4 billion SME in textile imports (up 0.6%) and 25.0 billion SME in apparel imports (unchanged).

With respect to specific sources, imports of textile and apparel products (except cotton and silk blend textiles) saw the following changes in April.
