Textile and Apparel Imports See Gains as Shipments from China, Vietnam, Israel Surge

The Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel reports that monthly imports of cotton, wool, manmade fiber, silk blend and non-cotton vegetable fiber textile and apparel products totaled 5.02 billion square meter equivalents in June, up 4.8 percent from May and 6.3 percent from June 2013. Textile imports totaled 2.86 billion SME, down 1.4 percent for the month but up 4.8 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.17 billion SME jumped 14.8 percent from May and rose 8.4 percent from a year earlier.

Imports of textiles and apparel totaled 28.0 billion SME for year-to-date June, up 4.2 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports rose 5.6 percent to 16.1 billion SME and apparel imports gained 2.3 percent to 11.9 billion SME.

For the 12-month period ending in June 2014, total imports of 57.7 billion SME were up 5.2 percent from the same period a year earlier and included 32.5 billion SME in textile imports (up 6.7 percent) and 25.1 billion SME in apparel imports (up 3.2 percent).

With respect to specific sources, imports of textile and apparel products (except cotton and silk blend textiles) saw the following changes in June.
