Standards for Fruits, Vegetables, Spices and Herbs to be Discussed at USDA Meetings

Fruits and Vegetables. The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service will hold a public meeting Aug. 6 to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions that will be discussed at the 19th session of the Codex Committee on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, which will be held in Mexico Oct. 5-9. The CCFFV is responsible for elaborating worldwide standards and codes of practice as may be appropriate for fresh fruits and vegetables.

The following items on the agenda for the 19th session of the CCFFV will be discussed during the public meeting.

- proposed draft standards for okra, ware potatoes, garlic, aubergines and kiwifruit

- minimum maturity requirements for table grapes

- proposals for new work for Codex standards for fresh fruits and vegetables

Spices and Herbs. FSIS will hold a public meeting Aug. 19 to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions that will be discussed at the second session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs, which will be held in Goa, India, Sept. 14-18. The CCSCH is responsible for elaborating worldwide standards for spices and culinary herbs in their dried and dehydrated state in whole, ground, and cracked or crushed form.

The following items on the agenda for the second session of the CCSCH will be discussed during the public meeting.

- proposed draft standards for black, white and green pepper; cumin; oregano; and thyme

- discussion paper on grouping of spices and culinary herbs
