Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg Trade Report

The Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service has withdrawn a March 2016 proposed rule that would have amended the Beef Promotion and Research Order to increase assessment levels for imported veal and veal products based on revised determinations of live animal equivalencies. Specifically, this rule would have imposed an assessment of $0.016936 per kilogram on imported veal classified under the following HTSUS numbers: 0201.20.5010, 0201.20.5020, 0201.30.5010, 0201.30.5020, 0202.30.5010 and 0202.30.5020.

AMS states that it is withdrawing the proposal because of an error in the weight of imported veal carcasses used to determine the assessment rate for imported veal and veal products and because the industry requested the formula for how the assessment rate is calculated. AMS plans to publish a new proposed rule with the corrected carcass weight and formula.
