Six Energy Conservation Standards for Walk-In Coolers and Freezers Vacated

Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg Trade Report

The Department of Energy has issued a final rule amending its regulations to reflect a court order vacating six of 19 standards pertaining to certain refrigeration systems used in walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer applications that were issued in June 2014. The vacated standards relate to (1) multiplex condensing refrigeration systems operating at medium and low temperatures and (2) dedicated condensing refrigeration systems operating at low temperatures.

This rule is effective as of Nov. 12 but the court order had legal effect immediately upon its filing on Aug. 10. Compliance with the 13 remaining standards from the June 2014 final rule that were not vacated by the court order – which apply to dedicated condensing refrigeration systems operating at medium temperatures, panels and doors – continues to be required on June 5, 2017.
