CBP Commissioner Nominee is Current Drug Czar and Former Police Chief

President Obama announced Aug. 1 his intention to nominate R. Gil Kerlikowske as commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Kerlikowske has been director of national drug control policy since 2009 and previously served as the deputy director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services at the Department of Justice. According to a White House press release, he has 37 years of law enforcement and drug policy experience, including nine years as chief of police in Seattle, Wash., and five years as police commissioner in Buffalo, N.Y.
