The State Department announced May 6 a partnership with the Port of San Diego under which “the vast expertise and experience of the Port’s Harbor Police Department will be put to work” helping nations in Latin America and Asia build their capacity to establish effective port and maritime security. Officers will provide training and mentorship on subjects including maritime firefighting, counter smuggling, human trafficking, K-9 detection of explosives/narcotics, aviation security, vessel operations, maritime tactical training and dive operations. This is State’s second such partnership and builds on its existing work with PortMiami to provide security assistance to Latin America and the Caribbean.
