President Obama announced Sept. 17 that he will nominate Mario Cordero to remain a commissioner and chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. Before coming to the FMC Cordero worked as a private sector attorney for 15 years and also served eight years on the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, including one term as president and two terms as vice-president. He also served as a professor of political science at Long Beach City College and was on the Long Beach Community Development Commission.

On Sept. 18 the president announced his intent to appoint David Abney, chief executive officer of United Parcel Service, as a member of the President’s Export Council. Abney has worked at UPS for more than 40 years, including terms as president of UPS International from 2003 to 2007 and the integration manager for the UPS and Fritz Companies merger from 2001 to 2002. He is currently chairman of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta, a member of the Business Roundtable and a member of the board of directors of Johnson Controls Inc.
