USDA Official Pledges Focus on Processing Import/Export Documentation

Kevin Shea, head of the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural and Plant Health Inspection Service, said in an Oct. 18 message that following the 17-day federal government shutdown APHIS will focus on addressing critical needs “as quickly as possible.” Shea said that one important priority is working with importers and exporters to process permit requests and health certificates for those whose livelihoods depend on this documentation. However, he also asked for patience from affected stakeholders, noting that APHIS will not be able to “make up for almost 3 weeks of missed work in just a day or two.”
