DOE Moves Toward Test Procedures, Energy Standards for Split System Units. The Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is proposing to determine that residential central air conditioner split-system condensing units and residential heat pump split-system outdoor units qualify as covered products under Part A of Title III of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. Comments, data and information on this proposal are due no later than Feb. 10. If, after considering any comments received, a final determination of coverage for condensing units and outdoor units is issued, DOE will consider both a test procedure (for measuring the energy efficiency, energy use or estimated annual operating cost) and an energy conservation standard for these products.
