Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada announced Nov. 13 the signing of a mutual recognition agreement with Mexico on the conformity assessment of telecommunications equipment. According to an agency press release, the agreement means that for telecom equipment destined for the Mexican market from Canada, test results from recognized laboratories in Canada will be accepted in Mexico for purposes of regulatory approval, thus eliminating the need for retesting in Mexico.

The agency indicated that the agreement will facilitate Canadian producers’ access to the rapidly growing Mexican mobile phone market, which is expected to total 107.3 million subscribers by 2014. Mexican telecom imports totaled $2.8 billion for the first eight months of 2011, the press release notes, a 7.6% increase from the same period in 2010.
