President Obama has announced his intention to nominate Dr. Rebecca M. Blank, currently acting deputy secretary of Commerce, to officially take that position. In May 2009 Blank was appointed under secretary of Commerce for economic affairs, where she runs the Economic and Statistics Administration and is responsible for managing the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Prior to joining the Obama administration, she was dean of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan and co-director of the National Poverty Center. During the Clinton administration she served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers.

Separately, Commerce Secretary John Bryson announced Nov. 1 that the Senate has confirmed Eric L. Hirschhorn as under secretary of commerce for export administration and head of the Bureau of Industry and Security. Hirschhorn has been serving in that capacity since March 2010, but that recess appointment was due to expire at the end of this year.
